Business intelligence and data warehousing solution delivers fresh business insights to Kiwi hotel chain

Heritage Hotels manages nine unique hotels throughout NZ. In the course of its business, the company generates large volumes of data, from rates and reservations to room nights and booking channels. Heritage asked Theta to help turn this data into current, reliable and useful business information.

This business intelligence solution has also featured as a Microsoft case study.

Heritage relied on a 10 year old Oracle spreadsheet-based system that generated reports on a monthly basis. This was no longer adequate - they needed more up to date information and the ability to quickly and easily access and analyse that information.

To better understand their requirements, our business intelligence project team worked with key Heritage team members, analysing their data and determining how that data would be used to make informed, actionable business decisions.

After the implementation of a successful proof of concept, we agreed that the appropriate solution would provide users with flexible reports and intuitive dashboards, sourcing data from an enterprise data warehouse.

The data warehouse is built using the Microsoft business intelligence suite of products. Interactive dashboards make key business information visible at a glance, reports based on the previous day’s data are published directly to users’ desktops and ad hoc reports can be generated with ease, allowing users to produce reports by themselves whenever they wish.

Implementing business intelligence and data warehousing has been a positive experience for Heritage. Reservations Development & Yield Manager Sue Christie says:

Greater reporting capability and flexibility gives us a clearer picture of what’s going on across the hotel chain. Daily emails of automated reports have proved a really useful way of sharing information and our customer reports now look more professional.  Most importantly, quicker and more regular access to business information has helped focus our sales team, which in turn will drive additional room nights and revenue.

Theta is now working with Heritage on stage two of the project.  This will integrate business intelligence with a new property management system, and provide additional trending and “what if” reporting capabilities.
