It was 3 days after Julia and Alan had spent over 16 hrs mountain biking, trekking, wading, swimming, rock climbing, abseiling and rifle shooting to complete the ARC "12 hour" race; so an "easy" training day was on the cards!
The plan was a tiki tour of some scenic highlights around Karekare to make it easy to retire home for a sleep if needed. First up was a climb of Watchman Rock, the huge volcanic plug that dominates Karekare Beach. A tiny track up the back and a bit of rock scrambling takes us through some amazing pohutukawa to the spectacular summit right above the beach. Then on up Conman's track to more spectacular locations both off and on track above the 200m high cliffs around Mercer Bay. Dropping back to beach level on the little used Horoeka Track it was time to cool off by heading up the Ocean view Stream to a little waterfall. Still feeling OK we decided on one more hill and one more stream. The Company Stream flows over the 80m high Karekare Falls and Alan had never visited the top of it. So climbed the Taraire Track and descended the stream, with a bit of rock climbing and swimming to peer over the vertical drop. Great scenic workout for a hot summer day and a well-deservedcold beer back at Al & Joolz place to finish.
