Educating Whānau on Cyber Security: A New Weekly Series

Introducing Kiisha-Rose Woodhouse’s weekly Cyber Series, launched as part of her internship and the Theta Te Ao Māori Technology Scholarship.
At Theta, we’re proud to support emerging talent through initiatives like the Theta Te Ao Māori Technology Scholarship, helping grow the next generation of technology leaders in Aotearoa.
One of those rising talents is Kiisha-Rose Woodhouse, a current intern at Theta and previous Heta Te Ao Māori Technology Scholarship recipient, who is already making an impact through her passion for cyber security and community awareness.
As part of her internship, Kiisha has launched a cyber awareness campaign designed to help educate and protect people across Aotearoa. Kiisha-Rose said,
"I saw too many of our people, especially our older generation, being targeted by scams, and it didn’t sit right with me. So I decided to step up and be the IT superhero they needed, in the hope these lessons reach them or their whānau to pass on the knowledge."
Introducing a Weekly Cyber Awareness Series
Kiisha’s Cyber Series is a practical, easy-to-follow campaign aimed at raising awareness of common cyber threats and how to avoid them. With cyber scams becoming more frequent, and more convincing, the goal is simple: make cybersecurity knowledge accessible to everyone.
Each week, Kiisha will share short, focused lessons based on real-world scenarios on LinkedIn, TikTok and Instagram, helping individuals and organisations recognise risks and respond with confidence.
Because when it comes to cyber security, awareness is one of the most powerful forms of defence.
Episode 1: Understanding Vishing
Ever had a phone call from someone claiming to be from your bank, a government agency, or tech support?
It might seem legitimate in the moment but it could be vishing.
Vishing (voice phishing) is a scam where attackers use phone calls to pressure people into giving away personal or financial information. These scams often create a sense of urgency or fear, making it easier to catch people off guard.
In this first episode, Kiisha breaks down:
- What vishing is and how it works
- The warning signs to look out for
- What to do if you receive a suspicious call
Why This Matters
Cyber threats are becoming more common and more sophisticated. Attackers are increasingly impersonating trusted organisations and exploiting human behaviour.
By talking openly about these tactics and sharing knowledge, we can help build stronger awareness and reduce risk.
At Theta, we believe cybersecurity is not just about systems it’s about people.
Stay tuned and share Kiisha-Rose's weekly cyber series on her channels, where she continues to share practical tips to help keep our communities safe online. Because cyber safety isn’t just about individuals, it’s about our wider whānau.
