Azure North Migration: FAQs answered by Theta specialists

Since December 2024, New Zealand organisations have been able to start migrating to Microsoft's Azure North Data Centre. But what questions are organisations asking first? Here are our top FAQs.

Are many NZ organisations actually migrating?

Hamish Strong, Modern Platforms Manager at Theta,

"We're seeing interesting adoption by customers who already have workloads in Azure, as well as new customers who are now considering moving to Azure due to the local presence," he shares.

The data centre offers foundational services essential for hosting cloud-based workloads, with strategic services to follow based on demand.

What’s the difference between data sovereignty and data residency when it comes to this data centre?

Data residency means the data is stored in New Zealand, subject to local laws. However, data sovereignty is shared with the US due to Microsoft's US-based operations. Although this means there is still a dual sovereignty, it does simplify compliance in that Australian law doesn’t also need to be taken into account (for workloads stored in Australian data centres).

What about sustainability?

Jeff Wogen, Head of Digital, explains more about the environmental position of the Azure North data centre.

"Since day 1, it’s been powered by 100% renewable energy and innovative water-free cooling systems. These data centres are among the most sustainable ever built," he notes.

As for whether this is important to businesses? This commitment to sustainability aligns with the goals of many New Zealand organisations, enhancing their confidence in cloud adoption.
